RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Graduate Research Assistant Fall 2018-Present
Oregon State University, Co-Advisors: Dr. Stephen Giovannoni & Francis Chan
Currently testing the Hypoxic Barrier Hypothesis to determine how oxygen is respired, total use of dissolved organic carbon and how microbial community composition affects the formation and persistence of oxygen minimum zones.
Established and maintained cultures of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus for use in B vitamin trafficking project.
Student Independent Research Intern Spring 2017
NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Mentor: Dr. Parag Vaishampayan
Tested and implemented in house MALDI-TOF database for rapidly identifying microbes isolated from
spacecraft assembly cleanrooms.
Performed NASA Standard Spore Assay, colony counting and participated in the Mars 2020 Planetary
Protection sampling process.
Restructured and authored standard operating procedures for the MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometer and
Characterizing Novel Species in the space microbiology laboratory.
Performed basic/advanced microbial lab techniques, DNA extraction, lyophilization of microbial
samples, and sample deposition.
Student Researcher Fall 2013
University of the Virgin Islands, Mentor: Dr. Jennilee Robinson
Researched with the UVI Environmental Analysis Lab and Microbiology faculty studying water quality in John Brewers Bay, St. Thomas, USVI.
Assisted in collecting and evaluating water samples using IDEXX Enterolert and Colilert reagents.
Utilized GIS, rainfall data, and bacterial indicators to determine public health risks and safety of recreational water use following heavy Caribbean storms.
